Are you looking for a family milk cow?
Here at Refuge of Liberty farm, we specialize in offering quality genetics in our family milk cows. We want to offer manageable sizes and milk production for the everyday homesteader. Each year we have several calves or cows for sale that may fit your needs as a family milk cow, for breeding (bull calves), or to fill your freezer (steers).
We currently have a waiting list for calves that we make our way through each year. Please email info@refugeofliberty.com to be added to our waiting list. Please let us know exactly what you’re looking for in the email.
Our milk cows are regularly handled, and most are trained to a lead and halter. We breed for efficient grass-genetics (or low-grain input), parasite resistance, longevity of life and production, manageable sizes, manageable milk producers, a2/a2 protein, dual-purpose (milk & beef), calm temperments. Our cows are naturally horned and will not come dehorned. We do not do testing of any kind before our cows leave our herd.

COWS FOR SALE

I originally planned to keep her until December, but with the price of hay and having multiple other cows in milk, I think it’s time she can find a new home.
PLEASE READ HER DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY.
“Mama cow”
(our name for her, but her original name was Ella)
A2/A2 GRASS GENETICS JERSEY
(she could literally stay fat on air and water)
Between 7 and 8 years old.
Bred to calve in DECEMBER.
She is NOT CONFIRMED bred, however she was AI’d to an A2/A2 heritage genetics, grass genetics milking shorthorn sire named “Filepe” from Best Yet Sires.
She is a medium to heavy producer.
She is used to being milked once a day but last year we milked her twice a day. She was giving 2-3 gallons PER MILKING when milking twice a day. She will produce around 3 to 4 gallons once a day, depending on the time of year she is bred (she produces more when on grass, spring through late summer).
Easy calver. Never had any issues with mastitis or disease.
Very strong disease and parasite resistant genetics.
IMPORTANT:
This cow is a LARGE cow. She is very heavy because she has true grass genetics. She would do best with an owner who is experienced with milk cows, OR who is confident in their ability to handle her size (she’s not a giant, but she knows how to throw her weight around) She milks just fine, she is very food driven, and waits for us to milk every morning.
She IS NOT a cuddly, lead wherever you want cow. She will follow a bucket just fine. She is a a creature of habit and knows a new routine within 3 days. She will milk before feeding, or while feeding.
She is not a potential 4H project since she does not lead well (she’s never had to, she was a herd cow).
Her front teats are exceptional for hand milking. Her back teats are very short and could be hand milked but are not ideal. Her heifer calves have produced good teat placement. She is good in all quarters. She is used to being machine milked with an EZ Milker or a pulsating milker.
THIS COW IS HORNED.
She is not currently in milk (dried off 2 months ago).
She is trained to polywire and respects it well (even when the fence isnt on!)
She is an exceptional milk cow and she will take a few weeks to get used to you, but once she settles in, she’s golden.
